The iPhone has many incredible design innovations and is generally a very smart piece of kit and this is largely what's resulted in it being such a runaway hit as it is. However it's not without its flaws – nothing is – and among these is the camera which is actually quite hard to use and often results in the phone becoming dropped and meaning you need to repair your iPhone screen.
The problem with the iPhone camera is that the button you need to press to use it is on the screen rather than along the top of the phone or down the side. This is a problem because it means that you need to hold the phone in one hand in order to press the camera button and this means that you don't have as good a grip on it. At the same time another problem arises from the fact that the camera lens faces outwards and that this is down the other end of the phone. This then means that you have to hold your hand in a kind of pincer shape in order simply to avoid blocking the lens with your thumb or palm. Combined this means you have just your thumb and forefinger holding the phone and that's not much of a grip. Why you end up with so many a cracked iPhone then is very clear.
This problem is very much exacerbated when you are taking photos of yourself, and you might do this by holding up the phone and pointing it at yourself (the front facing camera on iPhone 4s is good, but not nearly as high megapixels). You then need to use the same hand you're holding it with to press the camera button and that often means a wandering little finger jabbing at the screen and causing the phone to pivot between your finger and thumb – it's really playing with fire.
So to get over this problem you need a way to hold your phone that doesn't make it so dangerous, or you need to avoid holding it certain positions. Arms' length photos should generally be avoided unless you are somewhere quite and easy to take the time you need. If you are at a concert or on a roller coaster then it might feel like a good idea to take photos of yourself with your phone, but it actually isn't and chances are it will get knocked out of your hands. Only use your phone in such cases if there is someone there to hold it for you.
Another place you should avoid using the camera phone if possible is in clubs. This is not just for arm length photos but for photos in general. Everyone's drinking and milling around and it's just better not to if you can avoid it – take a real camera or let someone else handle the photos.
